God knows exactly what I need

Isn't it so amazing when God answers prayer above and beyond what we ask?  One of my memory verses for this week is Ephesians 3:20-21:
Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

I love how God doesn't just use one adverb to describe how he can answer our prayers - no, He uses two!  Two that are big and infinite.  He can answer our prayers more exceedingly and more abundantly than we can even think they could be answered.

This fall I was very excited to possibly have a chance to lead a Bible study with one of my dear friends.  However, that didn't work out and I was totally bummed.  I sulked for a few days.  I was kind of frustrated with God.  Didn't He know that I needed a Bible study during the day where I could have some accountability with other Christian women and be challenged to grow spiritually?   But, once I got over my pity party, I started to think about other options I had for Bible study.  I looked into CBS and BSF, but neither seemed to really fit my schedule and I wasn't really feeling that excited about them.  So I decided just to do an individual study at home and set out in prayer to find a good one.  So far, I haven't really had much luck and haven't landed on something I feel led to do, but I'm still searching.  (If anyone has any good ideas, I'm all ears.)

Then, the other day, my friend posted about something on her blog that is kind of like an online accountability group.  Perfect!  I need something with a challenge and accountability, but this way I am not taking time away from my home or children during the day.  Isn't it so cool that God knew what I needed even before I did and he provided an answer to my prayers for some form of Bible study exceedingly abundantly more than I asked or thought?

Basically, it's a 3-month challenge where we set goals for ourselves in 3 different areas: evangelism, connecting with God and memorization.  She explains it a lot better, so if you are curious, you should check out: http://www.growntogether.com/.   Would you consider joining me in this challenge?  I am still praying over my goals for the next three months, but I am excited to see how God plans to stretch me during that time.

I am linked up for Brag on God Friday for this post!

Happy birthday Brayden

Brayden is 8.  8!!  Really hard to believe.  He's getting so grown up in the way he acts and the things that interest him now.  Unfortunately for Brayden, he's kind of our test kid, the one we try out each new age and stage with.  So, we make quite a few mistakes and learn a lot of lessons about parenting through him, but he is so gracious to us and doesn't make us feel like the clueless parents we can be!

Brayden has really blossomed this past year it seems.  He has become even more social and really enjoys getting together with his friends.  He loves school and learning new things.  It's so neat to see some of his real talents that God has given him come out, things like music (playing piano), boldness and courage in sharing Jesus with others and studying something and figuring out how it works.

I made a goal this year that on each boy's birthday I would tell their birthday story, just like I did for Ashten when she was born.  I didn't have this blog when Brayden was born, so the details are fuzzy, but the major events of the day he was born I will never forget!

Brayden was born three days early, on a Monday morning.  I was working full-time at the time and the Friday before he was born, I had been so bored at work that I actually got all my time sheets ready to go in case I never made it back into work.  I had no thoughts at all of not being back at work on Monday, in fact I figured I would still be there a week from that Friday.  (I was born 12 days late and I figured I'd have to endure the same long pregnancy that my mom had to.)  However, Monday morning at 2 am, I woke up with some contractions.  Being my first pregnancy, I had no idea what to expect and whether or not these were real contractions.  So I went down to the basement and walked around in circles.  I would've gone for a real walk outside, but it was 2 am and dark!  I had read that if they were real contractions they would get worse if I walked, and if not, they would go away.  Well, they got worse!!  They were coming about 5-7 minutes apart and I was having really bad back pain along with each contraction.  At about 3:30 am, I woke Chris up and told him I thought I was in labor.  That got him up quick.  He spent the rest of the early morning hours before he headed into work making sub plans and getting stuff ready for the week in case we were having a baby that day.  At about 6 or so he headed into work (his normal time), figuring he'd make it at least half a day, if not a full day before we had to go to the hospital.  Meanwhile, I think I showered, ate and laid down to watch TV or something.  By about 7:30 am, I was feeling pretty bad, so I called my doctor.  She said it sounded like I should come in.  So I called Chris and he hurrily found someone to cover his class, called a sub and came home.  We got to the hospital about 8:30 in the morning and the doctor checked me and said that yes I was in labor and I would be having this baby sometime today.  That was the first time I really took a second and breathed and realized that this was happening.

After checking my cervix, I was at about 2 cm, so she went ahead and broke my water, which really got the contractions going.  Being naive and trying to be tough and brave, I was really hoping for a natural birth without any drugs.  I made it till noon doing the exercise ball, trying the jacuzzi and lots and lots of breathing and back rubs (Chris' poor fingers!).  When they checked me at noon and I was only at 4 cm, I gave up!!  I couldn't even stand up straight to sign the epidural paperwork, but at that moment, nothing else sounded better.  Once they got the epidural in, Chris and I watched Father of the Bride.  At about 3 pm, I was at a 5 (cm-wise).  This was not moving along very quickly, I felt like we'd be there in that L/D room FOREVER!

At about 3:45, a doula came in just to check on me.  She was one that was in there when I was trying to go the natural route and then was even supportive when I decided to get an epidural.  She asked how I was doing and I told her that I felt a lot of pressure and pain in my back, so she went to get the nurse.  I really didn't think anything of it, maybe I just needed to roll over to get the epidural flowing again?  When the nurse came in, I was at a 10!!  Yes, I dilated 5 cm in 45 mins!  So glad I couldn't feel that - whew.  (Oh, and if you were wondering, we made it all the way to the end of the movie where she's about to get married, but didn't get to finish it.)  So at about 4 in the afternoon I started pushing, and pushing, and pushing, and pushing, and pushing......  You see Brayden was face-up, which come to find out was what was causing all the back labor, and apparently makes it very hard for the baby to get through the birth canal.  So I pushed for 2 hours!  It went by really quick for me actually, but Chris says he remembers when the doctor came in at about 5 pm and said "you're doing good, you're about halfway there" and he was thinking "man, we've got another hour of this?"  But finally, at 6:01 pm (during the Broncos' first preseason game!) Brayden Connor was born.  First thing the doctor said about him?  "He's got long eyelashes!".  And he did, and still does.

(We bought our first digital camera when Brayden was 2 weeks old, so those are the first pictures I have of him on my computer)

Brayden, I am so happy that you came into our lives when you did.  You have brought so much joy to our lives these past eight years.  We are thankful to God for you!  Happy birthday!

Identical?

I have people say to me almost every day how much all the boys look alike.  I'm not just being silly, I REALLY don't see it.  Their personalities must get in the way!  With three, very different, very unique personalities, it's hard to see the physical resemblance sometimes.

Brayden:  He's a by-the-rules, by-the-book kid.  He likes to follow rules and dislikes when other people don't.  He loves to learn.  He is very insightful.  He's a social bug - give him 5 minutes in a new environment and he's made some new friend (you think I'm kidding? he's made friends camping and at an amusement park just in the past month!)  He'd sit and watch TV all day if we'd let him, but he actually really enjoys physical activity too.  He enjoys soccer and just recently he suggested that he and Daddy should work out every night together.

Logan: He's very compassionate, very caring and very tender-hearted, especially for animals!  Our fish had babies a few weeks ago (oh joy, right?).  While I was hoping they'd get eaten by the bigger fish, they did not.  While I was hoping Chris would come home and see them and flush them down the toilet, he did not.  When Chris suggested giving them to a teacher friend of his who has some really big fish (wink, wink), Logan got very upset and advocated hard for those little baby fish.  Logan has a real love for animals, especially small dogs and sea animals.  He's also a pleaser.  He really wants to make people happy and it really upsets him if he doesn't.  He loves photography and drawing and dancing and singing.

Preston:  He's our little adventurous daredevil.  He'll try anything his brothers do, and some things they don't.  He won't be stopped just because he's smaller.  My guess is our first injury-related ER visit will be for him.  He's a little comedian and entertainer, full of one-liners.  Sometimes Chris and I just lay in bed at night and share things Preston said that day with each other, totally cracking up.  He loves games.  He plays a mean game of Trouble (Chris nor I have ever beaten him) and he's very competitve on Mario Kart Wii.  He's rough and playful, but still very cuddly.  He's usually the "bad guy" when all the brothers are playing together, by choice usually!

I'm so glad that God gave us personalities.  How boring would the world be if we were all the same?  I know our family wouldn't be the same!

Girly

My baby girl is turning into such a girly girl.  I love it.  I have always secretly hoped that my one daughter with three older brothers would be all frilly and girly.  Not to take anything away from the boys, who are wonderful and adventurous and rowdy in their own special ways, but, boy oh boy, it is fun to dress a girl and play with girly toys and see her face light up when she sees shoes or a pretty dress or hair bows.

Like how she put one of her headbands on the baby doll?

She just learned to "twirl" last week....that's so cute!  Hard to get a picture of, but cute.  Oh, and the pigtails - don't get me started!

Boy meets tree

The other day, Brayden hit a bump on the bike path too hard and flew off his bike and right into a tree.  Thankfully he wasn't seriously hurt, just a little embarrasement, a big bump on his head and some scrapes on his leg.

Lakeside

We made our annual free trip (thanks to the library's summer reading program) to Lakeside last week. The boys had a lot of fun and Ashten contently sat in her stroller. It was a perfect family day!

Camping with friends

A few weeks ago we went camping with some friends.  We met up at Focus on the Family and played there a bit before heading to Garden of the Gods for a picnic lunch and some hiking.

All of us (minus me, who was taking the picture)

Then we headed to our campsite, but somehow they messed up our reservation, so we drove to a new one.  It wasn't what was planned, but it turned out to be a good place with a lake and some cool rocks to climb on.
This is pretty much what Brayden did the whole time we were there - climbed around on the rocks!
There were 12 kids total, pictured here are all the kids 2 or older
(read: the ones who would sit still long enough to take a picture - just barely!).
We enjoyed an evening of playing, eating some yummy chili and cooking smores.

Yum, a perfect marshmallow - burnt and gooey!
In the morning, we ate breakfast and played a little more before it was time to pack up and go home.  Ashten got into the true camping spirit by playing in the dirt and getting totally dirty!

We are so thankful for the friends God has placed in our lives and for His beautiful creation that we got to enjoy with some of them this weekend!

That silly Logan

Sometimes I just have to shake my head.....

And yes, that is in fact a pink hat, pink boa, a pink purse and a rose petal tutu!!  He raided his cousin's dres-up bin and had a blast!
