Easter 2015

I wasn't sure if we would be in the country for Easter this year (technically if our travel wasn't delayed two weeks we wouldn't have been), but I am glad we were. It was the first year of going to Easter service at our new church, so I'm glad we didn't miss that. And it's fun to be there on holidays with our kids, making memories and taking pictures!

Everything I had been looking forward to before we left has now happened - all that's left is to pack and go!!!!!

Viking of the month

Logan got Viking of the Month at his school for March! I am so proud of him!

I agree with everything Logan's teacher said about him, he is a great student and always tries to do his best!

Karate party

My niece had a birthday party last weekend and invited all her cousins! Logan had another birthday party for a friend, but Brayden, Preston and Ashten were all able to attend. They had so much fun at the party, the karate studio really did a great job with it!

They taught them how to punch and kick a little and then they played some games.

They fed them pizza and cake - no complaints from my kids there either!!

Madison was so sweet to invite them to her party and Ashten loved hanging out with Madison. Madison was sweet to include Ashten, even with all her friends there! The older Ashten gets, the more her and Madison get along and have in common, I love it!

Girly stuff

Ashten got a new nail polish set/nail dryer for her birthday and she's gotten pretty good at painting her own nails. When I see her painting her nails, she always seems more grown up to me - not my little toddler anymore!

Before we left for China, I wanted to be sure to get Ashten's hair cut because it was getting pretty stringy and scraggly on the ends. Unfortunately, the girl got my hair, which I can't grow out much past my shoulders or it just looks frizzy and stringy! She was so excited to get her hair washed at the salon and the lady did a really cute job with her hair!

I love doing girly stuff with my girl - it's so much fun to have a daughter to experience this stuff with! And pretty soon I'll have two daughters to do all this with - can't wait!!

Celebrating Logan

Logan's birthday is the second one in our family in March! His is 10 days after Ashten and it's usually over spring break, but this year he had school on his birthday. Normally this would be a fun thing because he would get to bring treats, but his school isn't allowing that any more and so it was just kind of a normal school day for him, unfortunately. I did go meet him for lunch and brought some treats, so that was fun!

Chris left later for work than usual so that Logan could wait till everyone was up and open presents before school. He was really happy about that!

He got right to work on his new lego sets before breakfast!

He had originally requested I make orange chicken (his favorite!) at home for dinner, but at the last minute he changed his mind and wanted to go out. We tried a new place because our other Chinese restaurant doesn't make orange chicken anymore. It was a yummy dinner out! We came home and had a Chima cake of Logan's design!

We had so much fun celebrating him and the joy he brings to our family!

Blogging about our trip

I had originally planned on blogging every day from China, but now it looks like that might not happen. I could probably spend hours trying to get it to work, but I don't have that time and I'm not willing to stress myself out that much. I will definitely blog about our entire trip once we return though!!

So, I have created a FB group that I will try and post in daily from China (mostly because I don't want to forget what we did every day so I can blog about it when we get home). If you are friends with me on FB, let me know and I will make sure you're added. If not, friend me and then ask to be added.

Thanks for being flexible, that's the name of the adoption game! And with six days left till we travel, flexibility is key.

Celebrating Ashten

We are blessed by two March birthdays in our family! It makes for a busy month, but it's fun busy with lots of birthday presents, cake and joy!!

First off is Ashten's birthday on the 21st. She turned 5 this year and was really into her birthday. We spent the day as a family, it was really relaxing and fun!

We started off the day with pancakes for breakfast (birthday girl's choice) and a photo op where everyone was sure to make sure everyone knew how old Ashten was:

Next up was presents and this girl was thrilled with what she got! Her main gift was a salon chair for dolls!

After a morning of playing and some pizza for lunch (again, birthday girl's choice), we had a pink-frosted brownie princess cake!

More pictures.....

After lunch we went and saw Night at the Museum 3 at the dollar theater (you guessed it, her choice) and then went and walked around the mall before coming home for a spaghetti dinner and more play time!

I love this little girl so much, she lights up my life. I'm so blessed to be her mommy and get to celebrate her and all the joy she brings to our family!

Brayden's last year of elementary school

Brayden is in his final year of elementary school this year (how did that happen so fast?) and it's been a rough year, to say the least. His school got a new principal and a new math curriculum and those two changes together created a "perfect storm" which has resulted in Brayden not being challenged at all in math and really getting to a point where he just hates going to school every day. Most mornings he begs me to not have to go to school because he "won't learn anything anyways". It's heartbreaking!

Brayden is bright and enjoys a challenge. It's been discouraging that even when he has asked for more challenge in math, his requests have been ignored or brushed off. We have even gone as far as contacting the principal, and she was very dismissive as well. His attitude (and ours to a certain extent) has become "just get through this year". Sad, but that's where we're at.

We did find out in early February that Brayden got into the school of our choice for 7-12th grade. It is an option school not to far from our house that is known for its high academic rigor and classical curriculum. We are optimistic that this will be a good environment for Brayden and that he will again love school and thrive in his education. It is a very difficult school to get into, but thankfully, Chris' best friend from his childhood is the principal there and may have had something to do with Brayden getting in. We are very grateful for how God orchestrated whatever events led to Brayden being chosen! And the good news is that now that Brayden has been accepted, all our other kids are guaranteed to get to go there too! Brayden got this shirt and hat at the orientation night at the school and I don't think he's gone a day without wearing the hat since!!

Another thing that has made this year hard for Brayden is that many of the kids in his class are not at all focused on academics and that makes Brayden stand out, for the worse. He has very few people he feels he could call a good friend and on more than one occasion, he has come home saying he sat alone at lunch or played alone at recess. As a mom, that breaks my heart, I hate to see my kids hurting and left out, but it's also been a great opportunity to talk to him about maintaining a positive attitude and really seeking God and His will in all of this. I had one year in elementary school that was like that and I still remember it to this day, it was very traumatic, but also something I think God might have used in my life to help me deal with in Brayden's life. At least I can sympathize and let him know he's not alone, unfortunately kids can be mean, but God is always there.

Brayden does have a few friends that he most days gets along with and hangs out with. They have all really gotten into Greek mythology this year, so they formed a Friday "Greek Geek Club". I am grateful for these like-minded friends that God has given Brayden and I pray daily that the "cool" kids (whoever determines that?!?!) would just let them be.

New old pics of Kailin

We are still waiting to travel, but only 1 more week and we leave!!!!!  I am so excited I can hardly stand it. About a week ago, our case worker, Tiffany, must have had a sense I was struggling with knowing we were still going to be waiting about 2 more weeks and she just called to check in and encourage me. I was grateful for this, her not just being there when there is movement in our adoption, but even when things are hard and the wait is longer than expected. I needed that phone call, that encouragement, that acknowledgment that she knows this stinks and she's frustrated right along with me!

The next day I got an email from Tiffany and she said she had been going through some old pictures from some of her past trips and found some of Kailin!!!! Old pictures of your child in the adoption world are like gold because you just don't get that many. I was so grateful that she found these and passed them on. These from from Kailin was 11 months old, taken in the orphanage.

We now have 16 pictures from before we got Kailin and we're hoping to get a few more when we're in China from the disposable camera we sent in her care package and possibly from the orphanage. I will take anything I can get, no matter how poor quality the picture is or how un-cute she is dressed or anything, those pictures tell her story before she was adopted and that is priceless!!!
